Gospel Rap is a title that does not do this album any justice. It is evident the intent of super producer Levester White, whose given us christian records that have ventured into the realm of secular radio play like "B.L.U.E: Times Change" and "The Warriors". When he turned to his own groups, project the unique fusion of rap and worship reflects the heart of the group collectively known as Peculiar Image.
The musicianship is top notch, the rhythm section is on point. Primarily, due to the fact that on most tracks it's a one man band. Levester White plays both drum and bass, with drums being his primary instrument. Sean Byrd also provides bass and guitar support on a few tracks (2. Free & 8. Seek God). Levester White who also a raps, and sings, on the album brings in the remaining guitar and bass support.
Heads begin to nod, immediately following the intro track. Free, comes in with a subtle, bass groove, while a syncopated guitar riff sitting prominent in the mix. Intitially you assume that "Free" is gonna set the tone for this project, but boy are you in for a suprise. The group, is definately versatile, with songs like "Can't Quit", that a bassline that moves the song so nicely you don't want it to quit. Did I say Peculiar Image was versatile, sick and tired, picks you up and drops you off, in 1973, with a fusion of Rap and Funk, that has me reaching for the keys to my fleetwood. While bassist extraordinare, Sean Byrd, leaves his stamp all over "Every Good Thing". Finally we reach the end of the album, not wanting the experience to end. You truly see the heart of Levester White, a heart given to worship. "I give you my heart", changes the pace totally, and ushers in a sweet sound that is so beautifully arranged, it should be in every ones, musical library. Bottom Line! Go get this album its full of good music.
